All About Botox Benefits
In 2017, more than 7 million procedures involving botulinum toxin for cosmetic improvement were performed in the United States, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, making Botox injections the most common minimally invasive cosmetic procedure. While the majority of these procedures addressed cosmetic appearance issues, at Palos Verdes Aesthetics, we also utilize Botox for a variety of other medical procedures. But how do you know if Botox is right for you? See if you’re aware of these 6 benefits of Botox.
What is Botox in Los Angeles?
Botox is a form of botulinum toxin, a purified substance that’s derived from bacteria. Injections of botulinum toxin temporarily reduce or eliminate facial fine lines and wrinkles by blocking the nerve signals to the muscle in which it was injected. In the 1980s, an ophthalmologist was searching for a remedy for a patient who had eyelid spasms and discovered that Botox also reduced facial wrinkles. After much research, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Botox for cosmetic use in 2002. Commonly known types of botulinum toxin type A injections include Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin® and Myobloc®.
Botox Benefit #1: Reduces Wrinkles
Men and women, especially in their 30’s and 40’s are prime candidates for utilizing Botox to reduce existing wrinkles and prevent them from occurring as quickly. Botox can make the face appear younger while still allowing for regular expressions, from smiling to frowning to raising the eyebrows. By limiting the movement of your facial muscles that cause the lines and wrinkles you can delay their onset. We recommend beginning Botox treatments when these lines first appear for best results. Once your wrinkles set in, meaning you can see them on your face even when you are not making facial expressions, it is more difficult to eliminate them with Botox. Lately, we’ve been seeing and treating patients in their early 20’s with Botox injections. At this age, we can usually see the obvious patterns of wrinkles from facial expressions and Botox injections can help delay the beginning of wrinkles appearing. Dr. Rheuark at Palos Verdes Aesthetics notes that Botox is not a replacement for everyday skin care like skin hydration, topical retinoids and sunscreen.
Botox Benefit #2: Treats Chronic Migraines
Approximately 3.2 million Americans live with the pain of chronic migraine headaches. Many of these patients are finding relief from Botox treatment. It was approved in 2010 by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of chronic migraine headaches – ones that happen half or more days in a month. Botox for migraines works by blocking the pain signals that are sent to the brain and relaxing muscles in the head so they aren’t as sensitive. To treat migraines, your doctor will inject Botox into your forehead, temples, and scalp. Relief should last for four to six months.
Botox Benefit #3: Treats Cervical Dystonia & Other Muscle Contractures.
Since Botox blocks nerve pain and relax muscles, doctors are finding it useful in the treatment of disorders such as cervical dystonia. Also called spasmodic torticollis, this condition is extremely painful. It causes your neck muscles to contract involuntarily making your head twist or turn to one side or causing your head to uncontrollably tilt forward or backward. Some other neurological conditions, such as cerebral palsy, can cause your limbs to pull in toward your center. In some cases, these contracted muscles can be relaxed with Botox injections.
Botox Benefit #4: Relaxes A Gummy Smile
You have “gummy” smile, or excessive gingival displays, when too much gum tissue shows when you smile. Usually just a genetic trait, but patients often say it makes them feel less confident or unattractive. Botox can help. By injecting Botox in the upper lip, it prevents the muscle prevent from contracting when you smile.
Botox Benefit #5: Alleviates Excessive Sweating
Sweating is normal for everyone but some people experience excessive sweating that can be embarrassing and interfere with their daily lives. This disorder, called hyperhidrosis, causes you to sweat even when the temperature isn’t hot or cold and you’re not exerting yourself. Your hands, feet and underarms usually sweat the most with hyperhidrosis. Botox injections can impede the chemical signals sent by nerves to stimulate the sweat glands. If the sweat glands don’t receive these signals, they will not produce moisture. Botox injections are used to temporarily stop the production of excessive sweat in the treated areas only, so you’ll continue to sweat normally in other areas of your body. You can expect your results to take about 1 week to fully develop. Your newfound dryness can last for up to 6 months.
Botox Benefit #6: Treats Lazy Eye & Eye Twitching
Amblyopia, or lazy eye, is when vision in one or both eyes doesn’t develop the right way when you are young. With lazy eye, there is an imbalance in the muscles tasked with positioning the eye correctly. By weakening the stronger muscle, the eye will appear more normal. Using Botox, a qualified doctors can also curb the contractions or twitching of muscles around the eye.
